The Western Province Para Surfing Trials were held on Saturday 22nd April 2023 at Surfers Corner Muizenberg. The field of athletes comprised of 34 surfers across twelve divisions. The event saw returning surfers, former South African national team members as well as newcomers to the sport competing for their place in the Western Province team.
The competitive side of para surfing in South Africa is growing and to support this growth the event included a judges training information session that was held on the Friday evening prior to the start of the event. This session was made available both in person and online for judges to gain more knowledge and insight into para surf judging regulations. The session included fourteen attendees.
The Western Province Trial results will be the official selection process for the Western Province Team that will compete in the South African Para Surfing Championships from 19th – 21st May 2023 in Cape Town.
This event would not have been possible without the support of our volunteers and sponsors. The volunteer group comprised of over 40 dedicated and passionate individuals who helped both on land and in the water.

Surfing South Africa is the recognised National governing body for the sport of surfing and its disciplines in South Africa. Para Surfing, along with longboarding, bodyboarding, kneeboarding and SUP Surfing are all disciplines within the organisation. All International and National events are sanctioned by SSA. Surfing South Africa is proud to be a member of the Olympic family, the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC), the African Surfing Confederation (ASC) and the International Surfing Association (ISA).
